Be an Exchange Student

Why AFS?

If you are not sure why AFS is the best student exchange organization, consider our international recognition, our history and experiences, our support, our selection and preparation processes.

AFS is the only international exchange organization to be awarded a United Nations Testimonial Citation for services to youths.

AFS is the world’s oldest and largest high school student exchange organization. It has been in operation for over 50 years.

AFS has the greatest diversity of destinations and programme lengths in the market.

AFS’s origins of volunteer service remain central to our values today. AFS volunteers continue to believe that bonds between individuals build international understanding.

AFS provides continuity through dealing with only one worldwide organization throughout the exchange process.

AFS has a vast wealth of experience, knowledge and skills that benefit all participating families in the exchange process.

Comprehensive selection process

AFS has a comprehensive screening and selection process for both students and host families. This ensures participants have the personal qualities needed to gain and contribute in the intercultural experience.

AFS works to place an outbound student in the most appropriate country and an inbound student in the most appropriate host family.

Extensive preparation process

Orientations for the students and their families prior to departure;

Comprehensive materials to prepare participants, such as language tapes and cultural learning booklets about host countries;

Host family information and ongoing contact before departure;

An orientation camp, including culture and language learning, on arrival in host country.

Host a Student

Be part of the global family and part of AFS. You can learn a lot on another culture by hosting a student, be it from Japan, Australia, Germany, Switzerland,Sweden,Argentina, Iceland or even Denmark! We receive about 50-60 students a year from various countries around the world.

”It has been a unique experience for the whole family as well as our extended families. Stefan has become part of the family and all our members and friends always ask about him whenever we meet or call each other. The best thing about hosting him is the experience of having a son in the family as both of our children are girls. It has also been a two way learning experience and process for Stefan and us” – Mohanchandran & family*
